A Paradise in the Atlantic Ocean São Miguel, the major island of the archipelago is known as well as the Green Island due to its green pastures.
Ex-libris of the island, the Vale das Furnas, have a paradisiacal view with the steam of the boilers, the boiling water that mixes and surround with the beauty of the lagoon. If one image is worth full than a thousand words, this is the most precious example we can find about it.
Another point of interest in the island is the Lagoa do Fogo, formed in the crater of an extinguished volcano located in the Serra de Água de Pau. From the top of the hills that surrounds this lagoon it is possible to overview the major part of the island. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades is one other of the three big lagoons of the island. With an huge crater, it is divide in two parts, called blue and green lagoon.
The major religious festivity of Azores happens in this island, at Ponta Delgada, where every year thousand of visitors assist to the happening. Those festivities are known as Senhor do Santo Cristo dos Milagres, those festivities took place every year at the fifth Sunday after Easter.
On its fertile lands are produced cereals, tea, fruit and wine, and feed the livestock. The first capital of the island was Vila Franca do Campo, but was devastated by a earthquake in 1522, then it was moved into Ponta Delgada until nowadays. |
