Born in Baía, Brazil, in 1942, Gilberto Gil started his career during the 60´s after editing his first single “Aquele Abraço”. Before, Gilberto Gil earned his living by creating publicity jingles for television and giving concerts. It wasn’t until the Brazilian folk music diva, Elis Regina, recorded his song “Louvação” that he gained visibility and was motivated to record his first album.
Admitting his passion for “Samba” and “Bossa Nova”, Gilberto Gil revealed a style that combined these two influences, demonstrating eclecticism in cooperating with other artists such as Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart and his forever friend Caetano Veloso. Considered a world music pioneer for combining in an original manner rock and folk with salsa and Brazilian popular music, Gilberto Gil proved interventionist character when he became the Brazilian Minister of Culture in January 2003, a position that he holds until this date.
However, on the 25th of July it’s the music and not an official visit that brings him to Portugal.
