The Tradition and Avant-Garde – exhibition marks Pablo Picasso’s 125th anniversary as well as the return, after 25 years, of the famous Guernica to Madrid. This famous work of art was completed in 1937, during the Spanish civil war. However, Picasso had it sent to MOMA in New York under the condition that it should return to Spain once the population lived under a democracy.
At the Reina Sofia Museum, while traveling through the life and work of one of the greatest geniuses of the world, one may appreciate all Guernica’s sketches and prep work.
Over 100 fascinating paintings and sculptures from all over the world, together for the first time ever, are on exhibition to be appreciated:
La Vida (1903) from the Cleveland Museum of Art, El nińo con el caballo (1906) from the Museum of Modern Art New York, Panes y frutero con frutas sobre una mesa (1908-1909) and El aficionado (1912) from the Kunst museum of Basilea, Autorretrato con paleta (1906) and Tres músicos (1921) from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, La flauta de Pan (1923) from the Picasso Museum in Paris, La alborada (1942) from the Centre Georges Pompidou in París or Las Meninas (1957) from the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.
At the Reina Sofia Museum, the exhibition is centered on the Guernica and its legacy, bringing together paintings where Picasso illustrates his indignations towards worldwide conflicts, such as the El Osario (1945) from the Museum of Modern Art New York, and the Korean Massacre (1951) from the Picasso Museum in Paris.
Also to appreciate at this museum are other illustrations that clearly condemn violence such as the Maximiliano Execution (1868-1869) of Edouard Manet, from the Städtische Kunsthalle in Mannheim, the Los fusilamientos del 3 de Mayo (1814) of Franciso de Goya, from the Prado Museum.
