America’s Cup in Barcelona, Spain
22 Nov 2006

The Port America’s Cup and Marina were centre stage at the 45th Salón Náutico Internacional de Barcelona (Barcelona Boat Show) last Wednesday the 15th of November. The 32nd America’s Cup has two spaces at the show, one in the pavilion exclusively dedicated to Port America’s Cup Marina with the other in Port Vell, showing visitors the features that will make Port America’s Cup the centre of the yachting universe in 2007.

When fully completed, Port America’s Cup Marina will have 636 berths. The first 150 slips were ready for the Valencia Louis Vuitton Acts in May and June 2006. The rest will be available from January 2007. Jean-Pierre Maffe, Director of Port America’s Cup, explains the Port America’s Cup Marina “is in the heart of the event, adjacent to the canal that the 12 America’s Cup teams use to get the race course, which is just minutes outside the breakwater.”

The Port and Marina remain open through the winter months and in the early spring, leading up to the beginning of the Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 13 on April 3rd. Port America’s Cup features multiple services and attractions for visitors.

Six restaurants, two bars, three shops and 12 team bases

Today, Port America’s Cup features two museums: The House of the America’s Cup, a multimedia exhibition where the visitor can learn about the history of the event through projections, photography and audio files; and the exhibition ‘There is no second. From America to Alinghi’. Here visitors can see four-meter replica models of all the winning boats and successful defenders of the America’s Cup. .

The entertainment offer is completed by boat tours to see the Port America’s Cup from a different point of view, get close to the team bases and go to the race course to see them training.

Port America’s Cup also features six restaurants and two bars open permanently where visitors can enjoy international food (Japanese, Spanish, Italian), or perhaps a drink aboard a 50-metre brigantine. There are also two official 32nd America’s Cup shops along with the Louis Vuitton store at the Veles e Vents building.

The centerpiece of Port America’s Cup, of course, is the 12 teams and their stunning bases sprinkled along the perimeter. Most team bases include a store and/or interactive activities for the public. In addition visitors can watch the teams at work, as they prepare for racing in April next year.
