No one does a party like the Spanish, and January 17’s St Anthony’s day, patron saint of the Balearic island of Mallorca, is no exception, with celebrations starting on the evening of January 16th and lasting over 24 hours. The main event is the dancing, drinking and singing around huge bonfires called ‘foguerons’, stoked up in Palma and other towns throughout the island. Pretty much everyone turns out, usually sporting elaborate, if not preposterous, fancy dress, and there ensues the kind of all-out boisterous partying that would put British bonfire night antics to shame. The next day, if your hangover can face the deafening clip-clop of a hundred trotting hooves, drag a consenting farmyard beast along to one of the island’s smaller towns, particularly Sa Pobla and Artŕ, where St Anthony’s Day proper is marked by a procession of sheep, cows, pigs and other barnyard miscreants, all off to get blessed by the saint for another year.
