Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, two of the brightest young stars on the ATP circuit, will join ATP World No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko and Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez at the Estoril Open, from April 28 to May 6, 2007.
For the first time ever, main draw knock-out action will begin on Sunday, April 29.
Davydenko, who returns to the Estadio Nacional for the fifth time since making his debut in 2001, claimed the 2003 Estoril Open title over Agustin Calleri of Argentina. The Russian lost in last year’s final to Nalbandian.
Flashy shot-maker Gonzalez, currently No. 5 in the ATP Rankings, finished runner-up to Roger Federer at the Australian Open in January. The 26-year-old Chilean, who has seven career ATP titles to his name, made his only previous appearance at the clay-court tournament in 2003 when he lost to Calleri in the quarterfinals.
Serbian Djokovic, who became the youngest winner of ATP Masters Series Miami last weekend (d. Canas), is enjoying a stellar year.
The 19-year-old is up to a career-high No. 7 in the ATP Rankings, with two ATP titles to his name in 2006. Djokovic captured the Adelaide title (d. Guccione) at the start of the year and also finished runner-up at ATP Masters Series (l. to Nadal).
Djokovic will be joined by one of his best friends on tour, Andy Murray. Scot Murray has a 23-5 ATP-level record this year, highlighted by a successful defense of his San Jose title (d. Karlovic) in February. The 19-year-old also reached the Doha final (l. to Ljubicic) and lost to Djokovic in the Indian Wells and Miami semifinals.
The main draw competition of the 18th Estoril Open will be played over eight days for the first time. The tournament had initially volunteered for the ATP’s experimental round robin format, but the ATP Board voted to end the trial period during a meeting in Miami last month.
