During the annual National Heritage Days, 35 of Amsterdam's major monuments open to the public free of charge, often with guided tours to discover otherwise unseen treasures, this year between the 8th and 9th of September.
Alongside free entry into the capital's major museums (and, with Holland having the highest number of museums per head in the world, there are a great many to choose from), the National Heritage Days also offer the chance to visit monuments that are closed to the public during the rest of the year. These include a number of private residences, where the rich furnishings are a treat in their own right.
