The Eiffel Tower's tapering silhouette could be reshaped with a "mushroom cap" viewing platform for the structure's 120th anniversary. Serero Architects in Paris won the competition and has submitted plans to build the temporary addition to the city's most famous building, which would double the capacity of the public viewing area on top floor.
If approved, the platform would be bolted to the original tower 905ft above the ground, but would not require any permanent modification to the original structure.
The structure would use a web of kevlar, a material more commonly used in body armour.
The Société d'exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (Sete), which maintains the landmark, said the plans would increase tourist access.
Almost seven million people a year visit the tower and average waiting for lifts can exceed an hour in peak times.
The tower was originally designed as a temporary structure by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair.
Despite his plans being initially rejected for being too unconventional, it now defines the Paris skyline and the most visited fee-charging monument in the world.
